For the second time, Art Basel is giving the medium of video its own platform in Hall a 213. Once again, nomerous projects - video tapes as well as space-impinging works - have been submitted. Lack of space has regrettably limited the number of works that could be included in the installative part of the forum. 

Stefano Cagol: Mònito - Monition - Mort Nucleàire

Stefano Cagol (1969) has gone in search oh historic film sequences of atomic tests wich he joins together and screens without any commentary in Monito (1995). The removal of the recordings from their original context and their seeming repetition enhances the force and hence also the expressiveness of the images.

"Images of men's and flying airplanes emerge alternating from a twilight world depicted with few intense strokes. The impending catastrophe is strongly felt and it comes, suddenly, with a hellish burst of light: the nuclear explosion. Like an earthquake, it invades the screen  a destroying tornado which flattens everything on its way and at the same time it envelopes the viewer, himself a victim of sheer horror. All is obliterated in the paroxism of explosions, the world like a blinding fire ball in the reflections of the vacant surviver's eyes. The images are complemented by an amazing as disconcerting sound effect: it is the rumble of the nuclear explosion transformed in a obsessive chilling sound. The shadow of  a horrible and not too far away past sweeps us with full strength, filtred through the artist ego. This is not a simple documentary, although it uses documentary images: the horror or reality, pictured with few but significant traits, sucks in the viewer forcing him to ponder about the meaning of live itself." "Volti di uomini alternati ad immagini di aeroplani in volo emergono da un mondo definito con pochi intensi tratti ed immerso in un'atmosfera chiaroscurale. Intensamente sentita è l'imminenza della catastrofe, che giunge improvvisa, sottolineata dall'immediato scoppio della luce: è l'esplosione nucleare. Simile ad un maremoto che tutto travolge, ad un tornado dall'effetto distruttivo, invade l'intero video, ma allo stesso tempo investe in pieno lo spettatore, che diventa a sua volta vittima dell'orrore. Nel parossismo delle esplosioni tutto è cancellato, il mondo stesso è una palla di luce accecante, riflessa negli occhi vacui dei sopravvissuti. Il tutto è accompagnato da un mirabile quanto inquietante effetto sonoro: il rombo dell'esplosione nucleare, qui trasformato in un suono ossessivo ed agghiacciante. Le ombre di un passato troppo vicino e sconvolgente ci travolgono con tutta la loro forza, filtrate dall'io dell'artista. Pur ispirato da una serie di documentari è ben più semplice documentario, che coinvolge lo spettatore a stento fino al suo termine: l'orrore della realtà, tratteggiata con pochi, significativi accenni, risucchia lo spettatore, costringendolo a riflettere sul senso stesso della vita."
