for the Preview at Academia Belgica Rome
ARTISTS: Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cannavacciuolo, The show will be hosted inside the prestigious exhibiting spaces of the Hôtel de Ville of Brussels, right on the Grand Place and at Ikob - Internationales Kunstzentrum Ostbelgien of Eupen (the main German-speaking town in Belgium). The show was born from a text by Angelo Capasso inserted in his last book “AA Art for art”(“AA L’arte per l’arte”, Rome, 2002) which goes back to Gertrude Stein’s words: “Artists have two mother-countries, a true mother-country, and an imaginary one, the one where their art takes place”. The exhibition offers a sight of the journeys and the moving of the contemporary art protagonists in the last thirty years. “These journeys have produced the most important contaminations in their languages. Originally a form of nomadism, it is from here that the actual condition of a global village in which our artistic culture navigates has taken form.” Italy, starting from the XVIII century Grand Tours has been the propelling center of art journeys. The culture of travel and nomadism has been since ever a prerogative of art. In the last years the moving has intensified, and above all, methods have radically changed, going from forms of permanent nomadism (the first migrations of Italian artists abroad or of foreign artists to Italy), up to “lighter”, motivated, circumscribed, and temporary trips. “Places of affection” is therefore a show which analyzes the nature of these journeys, and verifies the transformations which have taken place along the years, and thus the motivations which drive artists beyond the borders in the technological era of the media. At an exhibiting level, the show will articulate a double vision of these journeys through the works of art. The terms Landscape and Passage, used as the subtitle of the current exhibition, identify the varied nature of the exhibiting spaces in which the double principle of immobility and mobility, which usually resides inside the nature of moving, is highlighted. To these two principles, two seats correspond: a museum (Brussels), and a laboratory of research (Ikob). La mostra nasce da una testo di Angelo Capasso contenuto nel
suo ultimo libro “AA L’arte per l’arte” (Roma, 2002) che riprende le
parole di Gertrude Stein: "Gli artisti hanno due patrie, una patria
vera, e una immaginaria, quella dove trova luogo la loro arte ". La
mostra quindi è un percorso sui viaggi e gli spostamenti dei
protagonisti dell’arte contemporanea degli ultimi trent’anni. “Sono
questi spostamenti ad aver prodotto delle importanti contaminazioni nel
loro linguaggio. Da questa originaria forma di nomadismo ha preso forma
l’attuale condizione di villaggio globale nel quale naviga la cultura
artistica attuale.” L’Italia, a partire dal Grand Tour settecentesco
è stata il centro propulsore dei viaggi d’arte. La cultura del
viaggio e del nomadismo culturale è però una prerogativa
dell’arte da sempre. Negli ultimi anni questi spostamenti si sono
intensificati e soprattutto sono cambiati radicalmente nei metodi,
passando da forme di nomadismo stanziale (le prime emigrazioni degli
artisti italiani all’estero o degli artisti stranieri in Italia), fino
a spostamenti più "leggeri", motivati, circonstanziati e
temporanei. “Luoghi d’affezione" quindi è una mostra che
analizza la natura di questi spostamenti e verifica le trasformazioni
che sono intervenute negli anni e quindi le motivazioni che spingono
oggi gli artisti oltre confine, nell’epoca dei media e della
tecnologia. A livello espositivo la mostra articolerà una doppia
visione di questi spostamenti attraverso le opere. I termini Paesaggio
e passaggio, che sono posti come sottotitolo alla mostra, identificano
la diversa natura degli spazi espositivi in cui verrà ricreato
il doppio principio di staticità e mobilità che è
normalmente insito nella natura degli spostamenti. A questi due
principi, corrispondono le due sedi: una sede museale (Bruxelles) e un
