The repetetition of the rewritten image
by Giovanna Nicoletti

Stefano Cagol works on images and their repetitions using videos and photographs. He transforms the object of reality into a mechanic image, repeated and projected, variously coloured or without pigment. He uses elements deeply rooted in the imagery of our daily life as if they real were re-rewriting of events - unique and changing travel notes, - or tales of natural situations which transform themselves and eventually disappear into the ridges of the landscape, intended as nature or as an urban dimension. The sequences, loaded with pulsating energy, seem to follow the sound of the clouds, the passing of lights, the changeability of the shot. Cagol works on the multiplication of the subject, on the almost obsessive repetitiveness of the fragment to create a new dimension, which needs be set into a new context. Accelerations and stills produce an effect that seems to interfere with the pulsating and living presence of the sound, processed as a structural part of the video.
The temporal aspect becomes pivotal for his research. The speed of videos contrasts with the photographic sequences. In photographs the image is shattered into multiple squares, into modified representations of colour and form, even where the subject itself seems to endlessly repeat itself. Photographs and videos evolve into a relationship of mutual contamination. The split, move, multiply in the space of exposure, making the notion of representation multiform and impossible to seize. The eyes linger on a few individual images that lightly touch and move in sequences where the subjects interpenetrate, recreating the dimension of a virtual journey. This also appears quite evident in the doubling of the language effected in the titles.
Projections of videos and of photographs fixed onto aluminium plates or onto duratrans create a symbolic universe of sequences that maintain the concept of time and modify the space of representation. The annulment of time, which is multiplied endlessly and is finally cancelled and absorbed by itself, coincides with the alienating attitude of the space dimension, thus allowing the artist to set his subjects in a suspended reality, made of objects which turn out to be inexorably common.
For Contemporanea, an exhibition staged at Palazzo delle Albere in Trento, Stefano Cagol has worked on a project of video installations entitled "I'm a master", based on the relationship between "Eve and Nature". Eve stands for total and totalising energy. The image of Eve, a modern and heavenly interpretation of the model Barbie, appears on the screen as if emerging from the imagination, with a tempo set by the running of clouds. As reverse shot is the troubled advance of the snake which, a curious being, takes hold of the expanded dimension of terrestrial and human space, turned into a metaphor of the universe in its gleaming representation.
The video installation is completed by a series of photographic images, digitally reprocessed which, with the use of fragments, set the imagery of "I'm a master", suspended between the Eden dimension, the image of the Angel, Nature and the urban space, in a new context. Frequency, repetition, and variability are factors of knowledge through which reality is transformed into an analogue.
