The Time of the Flood

Water and fire, opposite elements par
excellence, are chosen by the artist to trigger a more complex
reading of antagonism. Usually, water extinguishes fire;
however, in this action we witness fire “attacking” water. In
ecology, antagonism indicates a direct action of one element
against the other and aware of such indication, the artist
cannot help but seeing man and nature in irresolvable opposition
to each other. Set in Flughafensee, a lake near the Tegel
Airport in Berlin, this action – a flame created by the
combination of a lighter and a hairspray can – echoes a former
action, from ten years go, in which the artist set fire on the
Arctic.
“The Time of the Flood” by Stefano Cagol
reflects on our relationship with nature, the imminent danger
and the flood as the summa of all the upheavals – it started in
November 2019 and became prophetic of the first great subversion
of the Third Millennium. The research project – from which a
series of six video works emerged – took place over a period of
one year between Berlin, Rome Venice and the Wadden Sea thanks
to the support of the Italian Council of the Italian Cultural
Ministry (6th edition, 2019). Collected in a book published by
Postmedia, the corpus of works was exhibited at the CCA Center
for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv (Dec. 2020-Apr. 2021), and
later at the Italian Cultural Institute in Vienna.
Acqua e fuoco, elementi opposti per eccellenza,
sono scelti dall'artista per innescare una lettura più complessa
dell'antagonismo. Di solito l'acqua spegne il fuoco, ma in
questa azione assistiamo al fuoco che "attacca" l'acqua. In
ecologia, l'antagonismo indica un'azione diretta di un elemento
contro l'altro e, consapevole di tale indicazione, l'artista non
può fare a meno di vedere essere umano e natura in irresolubile
opposizione tra loro. Ambientata nel Flughafensee, un lago
vicino all'aeroporto Tegel di Berlino, questa azione – una
fiamma creata dalla combinazione di un accendino e una
bomboletta di lacca per capelli – riecheggia un'azione
precedente, di dieci anni fa, in cui l'artista aveva “dato fuoco
all'Artico”.
"The Time of the Flood" di Stefano Cagol riflette sul nostro rapporto con la natura, sul pericolo imminente e sul diluvio come summa di tutti gli sconvolgimenti – è iniziato nel novembre 2019 ed è diventato profetico della prima grande sovversione del Terzo Millennio. Il progetto di ricerca – da cui sono scaturite sei opere video – si è svolto nell’arco di tempo di un anno tra Berlino, Roma Venezia e il Mare dei Wadden grazie al sostegno dell’Italian Council del Ministero italiano della Cultura. Raccontato in un libro edito da Postmedia, il corpus di opere è stato esposto al CCA Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv da dicembre 2020 ad aprile 2021 e, in seguito, all'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Vienna.
